حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ. وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ عَنِ الرَّبَابِ عَنْ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الضَّبِّىِّ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ إِذَا أَفْطَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى تَمْرٍ. زَادَ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ فَإِنَّهُ بَرَكَةٌ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَلْيُفْطِرْعَلَى مَاءٍ فَإِنَّهُ طَهُورٌ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Salmān Ibn-Āmir ad-Dabbiy said that the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "When one of you breaks his fast, he should do so with dates." Umar Ibnul-Khattāb said, "The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, 'As the night looms and the day comes to an end, and as the sun sets (1), then your fasting is over.'" Footnote (1): i.e. when it disappears completely. This means that the approach of the night and the departure of the day must be caused by the setting of the sun, and not by any other temporary cause which blocks out sunlight. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "God, Almighty and Sublime is He, said, 'The most beloved to Me, among my bondsmen, are those who are quickest to break their fast (1).'" Anas Ibn-Mālik asked Zayd, "How long was the interval?(3)" Zayd replied, "As long as [reciting] fifty verses [of the Qur'ān] (4)."
